The Top 5 Parks in New Bedford to Explore This Summer

When you think of New Bedford, you probably think of the ocean, history, and maybe even some amazing seafood. But one of the city’s best-kept secrets? Its parks. Whether you’re looking for a quiet escape, a place to walk the dog, or somewhere the kids can run wild, New Bedford has some great green spaces that don’t always get the spotlight. With summer winding down and fall just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to check them out.

Here are five of my favorite parks in New Bedford:

1. Buttonwood Park

The largest park in the city, Buttonwood Park is truly New Bedford’s crown jewel. It’s home to walking trails, sports fields, a pond, and the Buttonwood Park Zoo—perfect for families. You’ll often find joggers, dog walkers, and kids enjoying the playgrounds. It’s a community hub that always has something going on.

Nearby Perks: Buttonwood Park Zoo, Brooklawn Park Little League fields, and plenty of local eateries within a short drive.

2. Fort Taber Park / Fort Rodman

Located in the South End with stunning views of Buzzards Bay, Fort Taber is both scenic and historic. There are walking and biking trails, picnic areas, a military museum, and, of course, the historic fort itself. Sunset here is hard to beat.

Nearby Perks: West Beach, Hazelwood Park, and plenty of South End seafood spots.

3. Brooklawn Park

Known for its open fields and recreational areas, Brooklawn Park is a great spot for soccer, baseball, or just enjoying the outdoors. It’s also home to Brooklawn Park Farmers Market during the summer months, giving it a nice local vibe.

Nearby Perks: St. Mary’s Church, the Acushnet Avenue restaurant scene, and local markets.

4. Hazelwood Park

A hidden gem in the South End, Hazelwood Park sits right along the waterfront. It offers tennis courts, picnic spaces, and beautiful walking paths with ocean views. It’s one of the quieter parks in the city, making it perfect if you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon spot.

Nearby Perks: East Beach, Fort Taber, and a short drive to Clark’s Point Lighthouse.

5. Clasky Common Park

Smaller but centrally located, Clasky Common Park is best known for its open green space and winter holiday light display. During the warmer months, it’s a peaceful place for a walk or just enjoying a bit of shade in the middle of the city.

Nearby Perks: Downtown New Bedford, restaurants along Union Street, and the Whaling National Historical Park.

Wrapping It Up

Whether you’re a longtime New Bedford local or new to the area, these parks are worth a visit. From the history at Fort Taber to the family-friendly vibe at Buttonwood, each one has something unique to offer. With cooler fall weather right around the corner, now’s the time to get outside and take advantage of them!
